Schweizer Zucker AG has two company sites in Aarberg (BE) and Frauenfeld (TG). It is the only company in Switzerland to process sugar beet and supply the Swiss market with sugar and the animal feed it produces. SZU employs around 250 people.
SZU processes an average of more than 1.7 million tonnes of sugar beet per year in its two plants. From this, it produces between 250,000 and 300,000 tonnes of sugar annually. The beets are processed into granulated sugar and thick juice in the so-called “campaign” from the end of September to the end of December. The stored thick juice is also crystallized in spring. Further processing and packaging for the retail trade and industry takes place throughout the year.
